A 13-year-old girl has been charged with arson after she admitted using gasoline to start a fire Monday in a Eustis Middle School bathroom, the Lake County Sheriff’s Department said. Before the blaze was extinguished, three bathroom stalls and parts of the toilets were damaged by the fire, responding Sheriff’s Deputy William Crotty said. No students were injured. The girl, who could not explain why she started the fire, was transported to the Lake County jail and detained without bond at the request for the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice, Crotty said. An arrest affidavit said a coach taking attendance noticed the girl missing from gym class at about 1:22 p.m. The coach went into the locker room and reportedly observed the girl “exiting the restroom with her right foot on fire.” Crotty said the girl admitted pouring gasoline on the floor from one water bottle, along with nail polish and bug spray from another water bottle, before igniting the materials with a cigarette lighter. He also said the girl’s hair got burned during the incident. At the time, there were 56 students in the gym class, Crotty noted.
