IRISHGREENEYES BODYSNATCHER’S

Via Scoop.itJuvenile Justice

Ellenette Brown, who is black, had no clue 16-year-old Georgina Mitchell, who is white, was pregnant. How could you tell? In 1987, all the kids were wearing baggy football jerseys. Georgina’s was certainly roomy enough to hide a swelling belly.
But there were a lot of things Ellenette probably didn’t know about the young woman who befriended her son, John Harleston. Georgina had come to Clarksville to live with her sister. Her mother warned her she could come back home to Georgia on one condition: without the black baby growing in her belly. Georgina never went home.
Instead, she began hanging around Ellenette’s house, a gathering spot for neighborhood teens. Ellenette, a trim woman with finely boned hands, was a substitute teacher at a nearby elementary school. Kids like Georgina were drawn to her. They could talk to her about things they could never broach with their own parents.

Beyond Scared Straight -Juvenile Justice Reform: For a teen’s impulsive, unthinkable act, Cyntoia Brown got an adult’s life sentence. Was justice served?

Ellenette didn’t mind a little wine during the weekend, but she thought it was time for Thomas to dry out. He was livid. In response, he hurled a lamp at her and gripped her throat, choking her.
John Harleston found out the next day and rushed over. As soon as he saw Thomas, he attacked. The son began to strangle his stepfather, wrestling him to the floor. Ellenette was away at church. Cyntoia, then roughly 9, was left to confront the enraged adults.
Petrified, screaming, she watched her father and brother struggle for life. In one shaking hand, she held the phone. In the other, she clutched a knife. She didn’t want to hurt John, but she wanted him to stop hurting her father. The phone, the knife; the phone, the knife.
The child managed to dial 911. But Cyntoia’s relationship with her father never recovered, Ellenette says. Around that time, Cyntoia began drinking whenever she could — mouthfuls of wine, beer or liquor from unattended cups at Super Bowl parties when no one was looking; booze raided from the liquor cabinet and stored in plastic bottles in the closet.

Beyond Scared Straight -Juvenile Justice Reform: Cyntoia Brown, LIFE student at local prison, is subject of film shown at HumanDocs

Via Scoop.itJuvenile Justice

Six years after the murder, Brown is studying as a Lipscomb University undergraduate student – despite serving a life sentence in the prison at the Tennessee Prison for Women (TPFW) – as part of Lipscomb’s LIFE (Lipscomb Initiative For Education) program. Thirty students from campus spend one night a week studying side-by-side with the inmates for credit. In addition to the screening of the film, Lipscomb will present a panel including the filmmaker; Brown’s adoptive mother Ellenette Brown (who is featured in the film); Randy Spivey, a local lawyer who has taught Brown in the Lipscomb program; and Preston Shipp, a former appellate prosecutor who worked on her case and who also happened to teach her through the LIFE program.

Beyond Scared Straight -Juvenile Justice Reform: Tyler Witt “The Killer and the Raven”

Via Scoop.itJuvenile Justice

Tylar Witt, who was convicted of second-degree murder, helped hatch the plot after Joanne Witt made a statutory rape complaint against her boyfriend. Joanne gave police her daughter’s diary. That was apparently enough to prompt Steven Colver to murder her, with Tylar aiding in the planning process. Tylar testified at Colver’s trial that they planned the killing together, but while he did it, she “put my hands on my ears, closed my eyes and hummed.”

Beyond Scared Straight -Juvenile Justice Reform: Johnny Depp – Johnny Depp Still Rallying Support For West Memphis Three

Via Scoop.itJuvenile Justice

“It was ugly and a raw deal from the get-go back in ’93… When you’re thinking of these three kids, one, Damien Echols, on death row for 18 years, spent 10 years in isolation, for a crime that he did not commit.”
And the actor is secretly holding out hope U.S. President Barack Obama will pardon the controversial West Memphis Three and clear each of their records.
He adds, “I mean, it would be wonderful if he did, but I think he’s got a few other things on his mind at the moment… What I’m hoping is that the investigation will continue outside of the courthouse right now and that we will be able to prove the real killers.”
Depp isn’t the only celebrity fighting for justice for the West Memphis Three – rocker Eddie Vedder and Dixie Chicks star Natalie Maines have been close to the case for years and moviemaker Peter Jackson has been quietly funding a private investigation into the murders.

Beyond Scared Straight -Juvenile Justice Reform: Teen Pleads Guilty To Killing Adopted Sister

Via Scoop.itJuvenile Justice

GUTHRIE, Ky. – A Kentucky teen charged with killing his adopted sister pleaded guilty in court Friday. The Kentucky New Era reported that 18-year-old Garrett Thomas Dye entered the plea in Todd County Circuit Court. He was sentenced to 50 years in prison. Dye was charged with killing his sister, 9-year-old Amy Dye, back in February. She was found beaten to death in a field near her home just hours after being reported missing. Police said he beat her to death with a hydraulic jack, then hid her body. The plea will allow Dye to appeal a decision by Circuit Judge Tyler Gill to allow statements he made to police into evidence in the case. Dye had been scheduled to go on trial as an adult in November.

Beyond Scared Straight -Juvenile Justice Reform: Judging Jordan: Juvenile Held to an Adult Standard, Right or Wrong?

Via Scoop.itJuvenile Justice

“It’s simply inappropriate to put a 12-year-old child in the adult prison system, it won’t work,” said Orr, a Texas attorney. “It won’t benefit society or this child.” In his opinion Monday refusing to move the case to juvenile court, Lawrence County Judge Dominick Motto called Houk’s death “an execution-style killing of a defenseless pregnant young mother. “A more horrific crime is difficult to imagine,” he wrote. Brown’s attorneys, Dennis Elisco and David Acker, have argued the boy’s case would best be dealt with in juvenile court, where he could receive treatment and incarceration specifically aimed at younger offenders.
